Canada Receives First China-Made EVs as Lotus Opens Emerging Market With New Trade Deal

Under a trade deal signed this January, Geely-owned Lotus became the first automaker to export China-made EVs to Canada, shipping 18 Eletre electric SUVs as other brands prepare to follow.

Canada reached a trade agreement with China in January allowing annual imports of up to 49,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles. The agreement reduces the previous 100% tariff aligned with U.S. policy to 6.1%. Geely subsidiary Lotus is pioneering this agreement, shipping 18 Eletre electric SUVs to Canadian dealers. BYD and Chery have also begun recruiting staff in Canada and building sales networks, expected to enter the market later this year. Analysts note Chinese brand average prices around CAD 30,000, targeting the mass market. Canada's import quota splits into two batches of 24,500 vehicles each per half-year.
