Apple Launches Third-Generation Foundation Models AFM 3

Apple unveiled its third-generation Apple Foundation Models (AFM 3) at WWDC 2026 on June 8. The family comprises five models, with AFM 3 Core Advanced featuring 20 billion parameters using sparse activation that activates only 1 to 4 billion parameters per request.

Apple announced its third-generation foundation models, AFM 3, on June 8, 2026, at WWDC. The AFM 3 family consists of five models: on-device models AFM 3 Core, a 3-billion-parameter model, and AFM 3 Core Advanced, a 20-billion-parameter model using sparse activation; server-side models AFM 3 Cloud and AFM 3 Cloud Pro; and ADM 3 Cloud for image generation and editing. AFM 3 Core Advanced employs a sparsely activated architecture that activates only 1 to 4 billion parameters depending on the request, using a technique developed by Apple researchers called Instruction-Following Pruning. The full model is stored in NAND flash memory rather than DRAM. AFM 3 Cloud Pro was developed in collaboration with Google and NVIDIA, running on NVIDIA GPUs within Google Cloud infrastructure. Developers in Apples App Store Small Business Program, whose apps have accumulated fewer than 2 million downloads, can now call AFM 3 models on Private Cloud Compute at no cost.
