Scientists Achieve First-Ever Road Transport of Antimatter Across Switzerland

The CERN BASE research team successfully transported approximately 100 to 1,000 antiprotons by road over a distance of roughly five kilometres in Switzerland, marking a major milestone in antimatter research.

On March 24, the CERN BASE research team successfully completed a historic experiment, marking the first time antiprotons were transported by road transport methods, moving approximately 100 to 1,000 antiprotons.

Researchers stored the antiprotons in a specially designed Penning trap device and transported them via truck within Swiss territory for approximately 5 kilometers.

Antimatter is the opposite form of ordinary matter. When both come into contact, they immediately annihilate and release energy, making storage and transport technology extremely critical.

After the experiment concluded, the team conducted precise measurements on the antiprotons, confirming particles remained intact and undamaged throughout the transport process.

This successful experiment demonstrated that antimatter can be safely transported to different research facilities, opening new possibilities for international scientific research cooperation.

The research lead researcher stated this breakthrough will enable scientists to use the world's most advanced instruments worldwide to study antimatter without needing to repeatedly construct expensive production equipment at various locations.

Experts pointed out that precise antimatter research helps answer the physics core difficult problem of matter and antimatter quantity asymmetry in the universe.
