China & WorldAmnesty International: Global Executions Reach 44-Year High in 2025
The latest annual report by Amnesty International shows that at least 2,707 people were executed globally in 2025, a 78 percent increase over 2024 and the highest figure recorded since 1981.
Amnesty International released its annual death penalty report on May 17th, documenting execution data from 17 countries.
The report noted that Iran was the primary driver of this surge, carrying out at least 2,159 executions in that year, more than double the previous year.
Saudi Arabia's executions reached at least 356 people, with many cases related to drug crimes. Nearly half of all known executions globally are connected to drug-related offenses.
U.S. executions nearly doubled, rising from 25 in 2024 to 47 in 2025.
Amnesty International simultaneously pointed out that the data does not cover China's situation, as the Chinese government classifies relevant data as state secrets.
The organization believes China remains the country with the largest number of executions carried out globally.
