AI and Copyright Legal Battles

Whether generative AI has the right to use protected content for training has become a focal point in tech and legal sectors.

Since 2023, numerous copyright lawsuits against OpenAI, Google, and Meta have been filed continuously. Prominent authors including John Grisham jointly sued OpenAI for copyright infringement. Visual artists also sued image generation AI companies including Stability AI. Getty Images claimed Stability AI used over 12 million of its photos.

In June 2024, record companies including Sony, Universal, and Warner filed lawsuits against music generation AIs including Suno and Udio. These lawsuits center on core questions about whether AI training constitutes fair use and whether AI-generated content represents derivative works.
